Base Camp

Every trek into a new language starts here: learn to read its script. You know the flag, so you know the word. Pick scripts, click a column heading to light it up with play buttons, tap a name to see how it's read. drill › opens a script's cards, quiz and letter chart.

Names from the Unicode Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR), the translations phones and browsers use. Readings are a guide to the sound, not a formal transliteration; for Hebrew, Arabic, Persian and Urdu they include the short vowels the script leaves out. Scripts marked beta are still being checked: hover over the label to see why, and tell us if you spot a mistake.
